How we got started
In 2016 the Day Centre in Micklefield announced it would merge with the Day Centre in Cressex. Mandy and Haley knew this left many of the local senior residents in the surrounding area with no where to go with the loss of this important local resource. They came up with the idea of Seniors Social, a service that is designed to offer a better experience to clients compared to other day care centres.
Mandy and Haley decided to get in touch with Marsh and Micklefield Big Local, the Big Local has four programme outcomes:
1. Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them.
2. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future.
3. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises.
4. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.
Marsh and Micklefield Big Local were given £1,000,000 to develop these ideas. The Marsh and Micklefield Big Local Partnership – a group of residents who run the Big Local, decided to lend the support of their Project Manager Lisa Meaney to help Mandy and Haley set up a Social Enterprise.
In April 2017 Mandy and Haley signed up to Red Kites 12 week business course which helps people with their business plans. The course was funded by Red kite. At the end of the course there was a Dragons Den presentation with a pot of £6000.00.
In May 2017 Mandy and Haley held a one off event to see what feedback they would get from prospective clients. They delivered leaflets to older peoples’ complexes, went to coffee mornings and put posters up in shop windows and doctors surgeries to help to promote the idea.
The event was attended by 25 senior residents who were entertained by Kevin Taylor. A free lunch was provided and everyone received a raffle prize.
In July 2017 Mandy and Haley went before the Dragons at the Red Kite business course where they pitched their business idea and won £1,730 to put towards their business start up costs. They then graduated from the course.
